East Lothian Special Needs Playschemes
Charity Number SCO17097

E.L.S.N.P.

East Lothian Special Needs Playschemes was formed in 1982 to provide respite for families during the school holidays and to provide suitable activities in a safe environment for the children. A lot of hard work by parents and supportive local authority staff has allowed the organization to develop over many years and we now provide playschemes during the Easter, summer and October holidays.

What We Do

Provide full day playschemes during school holidays for East Lothian children aged 5 -16 years with a wide range of special needs/disabilities.

We are based in North Berwick Community Centre and also use Prestonpans Primary school and Meadow Park school, Haddington during school holidays.

We offer one to one support and a wide range of activities such as swimming, horse riding, bouncy castles, art, bikes and days out.

We provide transport to and from playscheme to ensure it is accessible to everyone and to increase respite for families. We are a registered charity managed by a Management Committee of parents and supported financially by East Lothian council.

We also run the Star Youth Club on Tuesday evenings for teenagers with special needs.

Mission Statement To be a parent led organisation offering good quality play, social, educational opportunities for East Lothian children with special needs thereby providing valued respite for thier families. Through this we will facilitate valuable experience and training for the young people recruited as volunteers and staff.

How Do Children Get a Place Unfortunately we have a long waiting list for our playschemes so if you would like a place for your child you should contact us as soon as possible.

To go onto the waiting list we must receive a referral from a health or social work professional.

Volunteers We recruit young people from all over the East Lothian to work with the children on a one to one basis. Volunteers are thoroughly checked including an Enhanced Disclosure from Disclosure Scotland. Research has shown that volunteering at playschemes has a really positive impact on those involved. Confidence is increased, communication and caring skills developed, friendships are formed, skills learned and careers influenced. Most of all our volunteers have great fun!
